Information about how to find divorce records.

Where to find divorce records

There is an online guide to Divorce records and where to look for them in the research guides published by The National Archives.

How to apply for a copy of a divorce record depends on the amount of information you have. The GOV.UK website has clear guidance on how to get a copy of a decree absolute or final order.

There are very few divorce records held in Durham Record Office: only two divorce cause books for Durham County Court covering the years 1949 to 1950 (ref. CCo/Du 41-42).

You may also find details of divorces reported in local newspapers.

If you were married in church and need to provide a certified copy of the entry for divorce purposes, please contact us.
